Your passion in soap making can actually become a money spinning business.
I remember back in junior high school and in fine arts/home economics projects, we were asked to make some household everyday products. I can still recall how we made shoe polish, tie and dye fabrics, soaps etc. from scratch. Everyone had a particular project they really enjoyed, it was all fun then and more fun now that it is so obvious these little projects can bring in some good cash if you put some love into it.
I particularly love the body soap and cream business because it is a promising one, since everyone wants to look beautiful. My finding is that people spend tons on skin toning/lightning creams and soaps. The beautiful part of this is, you can start making soaps even from the comfort of your home for a start as it is not capital-intensive, attend a workshop or two on soap making and then start building your brand gradually.
You may want to consider the following before you launch your start-up;
*Are you getting a plant or doing home production for a start?
*Product certification This is mandatory in most places, so do your research on how to get your product tested and registered in compliance with the standardization policy of you locality.
*Ascertain product quality- will you be making high, medium or low quality soap? A market survey will help determine this so your proposed customers’ needs are met.
*Quantity- how much soap will you produce daily, weekly or monthly?
*Equipment- necessary equipment can be custom designed by a local engineer to suit your need. Some dealers can sell equipment and you make payment in instalments. Do what works for your business.
*Packaging- speaks volume of the quality of your brand. Your packaging must tell a story even before the soap completes the experience. Thankfully there are a lot of information on labelling and packaging ideas online.
*Publicity- what publicity strategy will you employ? You can leverage on influencers and the power of social media (e.g. Instagram) to project your brand.
*A very important thing to again consider, is your product offering or differentiation strategy. What makes your soap distinct from others in the market and why should a customer consider your brand over others?
It is important that you focus and stay dedicated before tangible results is seen in this business, like most others. You are almost good to go when you address the above points.
